ABOUT US
People of color have a special stake in health care reform, and for good reason. Heart disease, diabetes and cancer account for two-thirds of all U.S. health care costs and people of color have higher rates of all these diseases, and they fare worse in treatment. At the same time, people of color have the highest rates of uninsurance. With that in mind, as groups that represent people of color and their myriad interests, we decided to take this first step toward making sure our health care system embraces and includes the full diversity of the American family.
The latest U.S. Census data confirms that African American and Latino populations are changing the composition of the electorate across the country. This alliance between the largest African American and Latino organizations with other national civil rights and grassroots organizations offers great promise for a new majority coalition.
That’s why we have joined together to ensure our collective voices are heard. The historic step of achieving universal health care is truly within our grasp.
